Today, we rode Chief Joseph Highway again to Cooke City , topped off gas (they are still not welcoming of business) and headed into Yellowstone. Just outside of Cooke City was our first buffalo sighting. It was a bit close to the road for my liking, but did not mind that we were there. Thank goodness most our motorcycles sound like vacuum cleaners.

Day 4 – The Road of 1000 WOWs!
Monday, we headed out from beautiful Red Lodge to begin our stay in Cody. The highlight of this section of our trip was Beartooth Pass and Chief Joseph Hwy.

Day 3 – The great expanse

Today was a day of covering ground. Traveling between Gillette and Red Lodge MT you sure figure out that our nation is huge! This area reminds me of our time with Kevin’s mom and dad in Alaska – the valleys are so wide, you can’t imagine how many miles they cover and the mountain ranges seem even further, yet you still believe you should reach them in 20 minutes (spoiler: you can’t).
We travelled through Bighorn National Forest with it’s beautiful alpine trees, open pastures, snow drifts and unimaginable views. Matt thought the views in the area made the trip. We hope for even better in the days to come.

Saturday’s ride from Rapid City to Gillette, WY was different than our time the day before, but equally awe inspiring.
The long, sweeping curves of Vanocker Canyon were a great morning wake-up. It was easy to get into a great rhythm of the curves and enjoy the steep rock/evergreen covered cliffs in one of the best roads the Black Hills of South Dakota has to offer.

If the first day is any indication, we are in for a great trip. We had a leisurely morning and left around 8:15 and went right to Mt. Rushmore. We opted not to park and view the monument, so a couple drivebys took care of our curiosity.
